Pluck is a dating app. To introduce you to people we need some personal information, including some that is sensitive. This page says what we collect, why, who can see it, how long we keep it and what you can ask us to do.
The short version
- Other members see your first name, age, neighbourhood and photos. Never your email, date of birth or postcode.
- Your messages are between you and your match. Our moderation tools don't show them.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use analytics or tracking tools.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time, and it is deleted straight away.
Who we are
Pluck is run by Templar Works Ltd, 71 to 75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ (company number 17239871). We are the controller of your personal data under UK data protection law. For anything on this page, email support@pluckdating.com.
What we collect
What you give us
- Your email address, to send you sign-in codes. Pluck has no passwords.
- Your profile: first name, date of birth, gender, neighbourhood, the first half of your postcode (like E8), what you're looking for, and up to four photos.
- Who you'd like to meet: the genders you're interested in and an age range.
- What you send: messages, date suggestions (a time and a place), and your private answer to "did you meet?".
- Reports: if you report someone, the reason and anything you write.
- Invite codes you use or share.
What we record as you use Pluck
- Who was in your evening drop, who you plucked or passed, your matches and when each one's clock runs out.
- When you last opened the app (at most once an hour), and when you joined the waitlist and were let in.
- People you block.
- A log of significant actions (like a match starting or an account being deleted), linked to your account ID, used to fix problems and investigate misuse.
- Short-lived records of how often you've done things, to stop abuse (kept for an hour).
From your phone
- If you turn on notifications, a push token for your phone, so we can send them, and whether it's an iPhone or Android phone.
- Photos you choose to upload. Pluck never accesses your camera, microphone, contacts or precise location.
From other people
- Reports other members make about you, and notes our team adds when reviewing them.
- Whose invite code you used, if any.
What other people can see
People in whose evening drop you appear, and your matches, see your first name, age, neighbourhood and photos. Your matches also see the messages and date suggestions you send them.
They never see your email, date of birth, postcode, who you've passed on, your "did you meet?" answer, or whether you've reported or blocked them. When you block someone they aren't told.
The Pluck team can see profiles, photos and reports, so we can review reports and remove fake or unsafe accounts. Our moderation tools don't show messages.
Your sexuality
The genders you're interested in, together with your own, can say something about your sexuality. The law treats this as special category data, and we only use it with your explicit consent, which you give when you choose who you'd like to meet during sign-up.
We use it for one thing: deciding who appears in your drop and whose drop you appear in. It's never shown on your profile. Pluck can't introduce you to anyone without it, so to withdraw your consent, delete your account (or tell us and we will).
How we use it, and why we're allowed to
| What for | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Creating your account, signing you in, showing your profile, the evening drop, matches, messages and dates | Providing the service you signed up for (contract) |
| Using who you're interested in to choose your drop | Your explicit consent |
| Checking you're 18 or over | Contract, and our legal duty to keep children off the service |
| Ranking your drop (below) | Our legitimate interest in making introductions that lead to dates |
| Reviewing reports, removing fake or abusive accounts, limiting how often actions can be repeated | Our legitimate interest in keeping members safe |
| Notifications on your phone | Your consent, given in your phone's settings, which you can turn off there |
| Releasing the waitlist in balanced groups and measuring whether Pluck works (dates set, dates that happen) | Our legitimate interest in running the service |
| Keeping records we need for legal claims or that the law requires | Legal obligation and legitimate interests |
We never use your information for advertising and never sell it.
How the evening drop is chosen
Each evening a computer picks up to three people for you from everyone who fits you both ways (gender interest and age range) and hasn't been shown to you before. It ranks them by how close your postcode districts are, how recently they've used the app, how well what you're looking for overlaps, how often their matches have turned into dates, and how little they've been shown that week, with some chance mixed in. It doesn't rank people by how often they're picked.
This decides who you're introduced to; it has no legal or similarly significant effect on you. If you want to know more or would like a person to look at how it treats you, email us.
Who we share it with
Only companies that help us run Pluck, under contracts that let them use your data only to provide their service to us:
| Who | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Our database, sign-in and photo storage | London, UK |
| Postmark (AC PM LLC) | Sending sign-in codes | United States |
| Expo (650 Industries) | Delivering notifications to Apple and Google | United States |
| Apple and Google | Delivering notifications to iPhones (APNs) and Android phones (Firebase Cloud Messaging) | United States |
| Railway | Hosting the Pluck team's tools | EU (Netherlands) |
| Cloudflare | Hosting this website | Global |
Notifications carry only a first name and a short line like "Sent you a message"; never the message itself. We may also share information if the law requires it, or with the police where someone's safety is at risk.
Sending data outside the UK
Some of these companies process data in the United States. Where they do, we rely on the UK's data bridge with the US for certified companies, or on the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, so your data has the same protection as in the UK.
How long we keep it
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account, profile and photos | Until you delete your account |
| Matches, messages, date suggestions and "did you meet?" answers | Until either person in the match deletes their account. Deleting your account removes the conversation for both of you. |
| Drops and blocks | Until either person deletes their account |
| Reports you make | Kept after you delete your account, no longer linked to you, because they help keep others safe |
| Reports about you | Kept after your account is deleted, with your first name, for as long as we need them for safety or legal reasons |
| Push tokens | Until you sign out, delete your account, or your phone stops accepting them |
| Notifications waiting to be sent | 7 days |
| Abuse-prevention records | 1 hour |
| The action log | Kept after you delete your account, linked only to an ID that no longer leads to you |
| Database backups | Up to 7 days, so deleted data leaves our backups within a week |
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your personal data,
- correct anything that's wrong (you can change your photos and who you'd like to meet in the app),
- delete your data (you can delete your account yourself),
- give you your data in a format you can take elsewhere,
- stop or limit how we use it, or object to a use based on our legitimate interests,
- withdraw your consent at any time.
Email support@pluckdating.com from the address on your account. We'll reply within a month. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, though we'd like the chance to put it right first.
Keeping it safe
Everything travels encrypted. The database can only be reached through our own server code, which checks who you are on every request; photos are private and shown through links that expire within an hour. Only the people who run Pluck can use the team tools, and access is granted to named people one by one.
Age
Pluck is only for people aged 18 and over. We check your date of birth when you sign up. If we learn someone under 18 has an account, we delete it. If you think someone on Pluck is under 18, report them in the app or email safety@pluckdating.com.
This website
pluckdating.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Cloudflare, which hosts it, keeps short-lived technical logs (like IP addresses) to serve the pages and protect them from attacks.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
